Thanksgiving Wines

As much as I love cooking, I typically get assigned the easiest job for the Thanksgiving family get together, and that is to bring the wine!  When you’re seeing family and friends that you haven’t seen for a long time, I’d much rather share a glass of wine and catch up with them, rather than slaving away in the kitchen.

If your family is assigning dishes or things for you to bring, volunteer to bring the wine. Here are a few suggestions that you can use to help you pick the wine, to make things a lot simpler.   You don’t have to choose all of these, just a few that will work for you and the rest of the crowd

Sparkling Wine – Great starter wine.  For a little cheapie, we found that the Schloss Biebrich Sekt from Germany is an excellent value for $10. For those of you who enjoy sparkling wine more, you may want to indulge in a nice Champagne like Duval Leyor which is in that $45 dollar price point.

Whites – Use a Riesling or Gewurztraminer.  Typically, a little bit of sweetness and acidity can go a long way with many dishes on the table.  We just brought in Boeckel Riesling from Alsace, which is quite nice at $12.99, and for the Gewurztraminer, we would recommend Trimbach, which is a weighty and rich Gewurztraminer at $23.99.

Rose – If its pink, it doesn’t mean that its sweet!  Rose is great wine to use between the white wine, and red wine.   We just brought in Mourges du Gres “Les Galets” into the store, and its one of the best quality to price point roses on the market.  Nice body, hints of cherry, strawberry and a bit of acidity with a dry finish!  Its only $8.99

Red Wine –  There are numerous ways you can go here, although something that I’ve been recommending for years is the Terres Falmet Cinsault from France.  Light/medium bodied, with nice fruit and soft acidity.  Terres Falmet Cinsault comes in at $12.99.  You can also go for Pinot Noir, Beaujolais and even big spicy reds!

Use these few suggestions to make your life easy during this Thanksgiving.  Remember, that having a few glasses of wine can make the awkward conversations with your in-laws that much easier to swallow 🙂

Cheers!

Fall is almost here, it’s time to drink our big reds!

Even though Ohio never ceases to fail us on teasing us with weather, it’s inevitable we will have a cool fall ahead of us.  Many drinkers change their taste to fall in line with the seasonal weather, like bright white wines for the summer, and heavier reds for the fall and winter months.

Let’s use the season and make an excuse to crack open a excellent bottle of red, to bring in the cooler days ahead!

We just received a few reds that are highly allocated and hard to find!

Cliff Lede Stag’s Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 $72.99

Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red 2009 $129.00

Altamura Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 $94.99

These wines year in and year out are hard to find, and really will be a special treat!

Cheers!

Summer’s Here!

Thinking about summer’s start always lead me to think about what we’ll be drinking on the patio. Rhone and the Sud varietal based Rose’s of course-

2012 Bieler Pere et Fils,  Coteaux D’Aix en Provence- $12.99

2012 Guilhem, Pays D’ Herault,  $11.99

2012 Domaine Sainte-Eugenie, Corbieres, $8.99

Lots of sparkling wines;

Sparkling Rieslings & Domestic Sparkling

Von Schleinitz, “Secco” Dry Sparkling Riesling  $15.99

French Sparklings from outside of Champagne

Gerard Betrand, Cremant de Limoux, $16.99

Argyle, Brut, Oregon, $19.99

Teresa and I have also been tasting some truly exceptional white wines from around the world, bright acids and fruits allow for a palate cleansing experience while maintaining enough structure to hold up to food and cheeses.

Marc & Roger Labbe, Abymes, Savoie, $12.99

Anne Amie, “Cuvee A”, Willamette, Oregon $14.99

Belle Glos, Pinot noir Blanc, Sonoma $19.99

Duca Di Saragnano, Tuscany, $12.99

While I think about lighting the grill and throwing a fat, juicy piece of meat on it I always come back to the Rhone. Nothing says barbecue like a Grenache, Syrah, Mouvedre, or Carignan based blend. These wines show a fatty unctuousness with grilled meat tones, spicy underlay, and deep brooding fruits.

Chateau De Series, Cote Du Rhone, Rhone, France $13.99

Chateau De Segries, Lirac, Rhone, France $17.99

Domaine La Bouissiere, Gigondas, Rhone, France $49.99

The grill also screams Cabernet! We’ve brought in some fantastic new items from smaller producers as well as some big names.

B.R. Cohn, Cabernet Sauvignon, North Coast, California, $19.99

Conn Creek, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa, California, $29.99

Honig, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa, California, $39.99

Textbook, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa, California, $27.99

Textbook, Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, California, $49.99

Schweiger, Cabernet Sauvignon, Spring Mountain, California, $59.99

Cheers to Summer, Devon Barrett, C.S.
